BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Wednesday is Major League Baseball's inaugural "Lou Gehrig Day" -- and the Boston Red Sox are marking the occasion by remembering the life of Pete Frates.
Frates is most well known for spearheading and popularizing the "ALS Ice Bucket Challenge," which raised over $200 million for ALS research. He battled the disease for more than 7 years before he died at the age of 34 in December of 2019.
The team plans to celebrate their own "ALS Day" at Fenway Park with Frates' family on June 8, 2021, as the team is traveling to Houston on the official Lou Gehrig Day.

In the meantime, fans may notice players, managers, and coaches from across the league wearing a special “Lou Gehrig Day” patch on their uniforms - as well as every team displaying the “4-ALS” logo at their ballpark.
The Red Sox also plan to launch an ALS fundraiser, with the sale of special edition hats that read “Strike Out ALS - Pete Frates - Number 3.”
