BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Beloved Red Sox pitching legend Luis Tiant has died at the age of 83.

The Cuban-born right-hander known as 'El Tiante' turned and twisted his way into the hearts of Red Sox fans with his outsized flamboyant personality.

His professional baseball career spanned 19 years, eight for the Red Sox.

He was a three-time All Star and won 20 games four times.

Tiant led the Red Sox in 1975 winning 18 games that year despite a bad back, then pitched brilliantly through the post-season and into the World Series, the Sox losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Cincinnati Reds four games to three.

He is a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame as well as the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame.

After his career was over, Tiant remained close to the Red Sox and the region living with his family in Southborough, Mass.
