Red Sox Pitcher Out For Season Due To Post-COVID Heart Issue

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez will be out for the rest of the season due to heart complications that developed after he had COVID-19.

27-year -old Rodriguez, the team's top starting pitcher, was diagnosed with coronavirus in early July, ahead of summer camp. He was allowed to return to team workouts by July 18th.

According to Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom, Rodriguez was being monitored after returning, when he started showing evidence of myocarditis; an inflammation of the heart.

"Fortunately the severity of the complication looked mild, so we were optimistic it will resolve in short order and we would be able to progress him back to pitching," said Bloom. "But as we continued to monitor it, it has not resolved. It is still there."

Bloom said the team remains optimistic that Rodriguez will make a full recovery. However, since Rodriguez' myocarditis seems to be a persistent issue, Bloom said he will not have enough time to recover before the end of the season.

"He's not going to be able to come back and pitch this year," said Bloom, "We're going to shut him down for the season. There isn't enough time in this season to safely ramp him back up to pitching."
