QUINCY, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — In a 1776 letter to her husband, President John Adams, First Lady Abigail Adams wrote, "I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more generous and favourable to them than your ancestors."

Almost 250 years later, the City of Quincy hosted its third Remember the Ladies event at Quincy High School Saturday, honoring five local women for their contributions to the community.

This year's honorees were:

  • Linda Santoro of the Quincy Arts Association
  • Caryn Smith, owner of Caryn's Corner
  • Courtney Mitchell, Southwest Middle School principal
  • Daurice Cox, CEO of Bay State Community Services
  • Barbara Isola, lawyer, former prosecutor, and former Quincy School Committee member

Smith opened Caryn's Corner, a women's clothing boutique, 37 years ago and has since served on 17 non-profit boards.

"So many boards, when I first would sit on non-profit boards, it would be a room full of men," Smith reminisced. "And now I go in there and it’s usually at least half of women. And as one of my friends just said at a board meeting last week, he goes, 'When I look around this room, it’s the women that do all the work and we all get the credit.'"

Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch told WBZ all of the women honored have something in common with Abigail Adams.

"The word was used once: resiliency," Koch said. "These women have made incredible differences in the families of our city. They really have made the city a better place to live."

WBZ's Mike Macklin reports.
