MALDEN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — You've probably heard an apple a day keeps the doctor away but what about a 15-minute walk? Move after meals is the advice offered by the International Journal of General Medicine when it comes to maintaining your blood pressure and blood glucose levels.
"I don't think people are as active as they should be," said Mark of Malden. "A 15-minute walk after a heavy meal, that's not a lot to ask."
According to the CDC, 48% of adults in the United States have high blood pressure, that's approximately 119 million people. Undiagnosed and diagnosed diabetes cases account for 14% of the population — or 38 million adults.
"That's the reason I have to keep my health good because I have to keep my diabetes under control," said Agson of Malden.
The study suggests that the benefits of walking after eating are wide-ranging especially when it comes to weight loss which can positively impact blood pressure and sugar levels. Working muscles pull glucose into your muscles and use it as energy, maintaining energy levels. Although the study focused on adults 60 and up, anyone can benefit from the advice.
