BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Former Red Sox Shortstop Julio Lugo is dead at the age of 45, according to ESPN. The Major League journeyman was just a few days short of his 46th birthday: he would have turned 46 on Tuesday. Lugo's sister told ESPN's Enrique Rojas that he died suddenly on Thursday when leaving a gym. Lugo is best known in Boston for playing on the Red Sox's 2007 World Series Championship team.

Other sources said the cause of death was a presumed heart attack.

Lugo started his career with the Astros after being drafted by Houston in 1994. He began his major league career in 2000, playing on seven teams in his 12 year career.
