BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Center for Disease Control and Prevention data shows cases of norovirus, a stomach virus, have increased in the Northeast over the past several months.

Between the weeks of Oct. 21, 2023 and Nov. 4, 2023, on average, 4.6 percent of norovirus tests came back positive each week in the Northeast.

Since then, that figure has climbed almost every week. The three-week average for the week of Feb. 17, 2024 was 13.4 percent.

"It went through my daughter's school and everyone got it," one local told WBZ NewsRadio's Chris Fama. "I think we need masks back, gloves back [and] sanitary wipes."

According to the CDC, norovirus is the leading cause of diarrhea, vomiting and foodborne illness nationwide.

The CDC recommends frequent handwashing and sanitary food handling as ways to prevent infection.
