BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — If you need another reason to appreciate avocados, researchers suggest it could lead to a better night's rest.
According to a recent study in the Journal of the American Heart Association, participants who consumed the fruit daily experienced reduced cholesterol levels, improved diet quality and increased sleep.
The six-month study tracked 969 adults in two control groups: participants who consumed fewer than two avocados per month and those who ate one each day in addition to their regular diets.
Researchers suggest that the findings are linked to certain ingredients in avocados, which can also be found in melatonin, a substance that helps regulate sleep and magnesium which helps promote relaxation.
It's good news for South Street Diner owner, Saul Sidell, who says avocados are always on the menu.
"It's a miracle food so it's one of those things that it's not surprising that it's good for sleep too."
