HOPKINTON, Mass (WBZ NewsRadio) —A pregnant dog with a shattered leg and a bullet lodged in her has safely delivered her puppies.

"Pepper", a brown and black dog of about 50 lbs, was brought in to The Brown Dog Coalition’s partner shelter in Hopkinton at the beginning of March, where veterinarians discovered besides being pregnant, her back leg had been shattered by a bullet and her front leg still had a bullet lodged in it.

She was sent to the Foster Hospital for Small Animals at Tufts University in North Grafton for surgery where the bullet was removed and her shattered leg was stabilized.

Her puppies survived the surgery anesthesia and were born Saturday – on National Puppy Day.

According to the rescue’s Facebook post, Pepper will spend the next eight weeks recovering from the operation with her puppies.
