BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A six-week-old puppy found outside alone in East Boston Monday night is on the mend, recovering from an apparent case of Parvovirus at the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – Angell Animal Medical Center.
Officials at the MSPCA-Angell gave the pup the tentative name of "Tuesday," and said the illness that he was afflicted is always fatal without treatment. The animal center jumped into action the moment they heard the report of Tuesday.
“The call was about a puppy that appeared sick on Saratoga Street in the East Boston neighborhood. We immediately agreed to take him and get him into treatment at our Angell Animal Medical Center, whereas of this moment he is stable,” Director of Adoption Centers and Programs at the MSPCA-Angell Mike Keiley said.

As of posting, Tuesday is staying with rescue officials at the center's intensive care ward for ongoing treatment. Officials say they'll update the public on Tuesday's condition through their social media accounts.

So what is Parvovirus? According to the MSPCA-Angell, the disease attacks GI tracts and bone marrow, and other developing cells in puppies— though it's something that can be prevented with vaccination. Parvovirus is considered the most lethal and contagious virus that can infect unprotected dogs, according to a study published in the National Library of Medicine.
“Tuesday was very likely not vaccinated against parvo. We are pulling out all the stops to get him well and assuming he recovers, we’ll ensure he’s fully inoculated before placing him into an adoptive home," Keiley said.
The MSPCA-Angell says donations can help the center continue to care for animals like Tuesday.
