BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Several organizations are celebrating Founder's Day, also known as the National Park Service's birthday, on Monday.
Jon Palmer with Boston Harbor Now says the company marked the occasion by offering complimentary ferry rides.
"It's Founders Day, which is the anniversary of the founding of the National Park Service," Palmer said. "So we're running free ferries out to Spectacle Island today."
Created on August 25, 1916, the National Park Service preserves the natural and cultural resources and values of the National Park System. The National Park Service continues to serve more than 400 parks across the country.

Kalimah Mustafa-Widderg, also with Boston Harbor Now, says the parks are a great way to appreciate nature right near the city.
"The Boston Harbor Islands and Spectacle Island, being a national and state park — it's a celebration of the National Park Service and Founders Day, being the day that the National Park Service started."
Located 30 minutes outside of Boston, Spectacle Island offers panoramic views, cool breezes, and plenty of open space to celebrate the public lands.
"There's a ring trail that goes around the outside of the island, and then there's spiral trails that go up the drumlands on either side. And it's the highest point in the Boston Harbor Islands National and State Park," Palmer stated. "We have gorgeous views of the Boston Skyline on one side, and you can see out the rest of the park on the other."
The last free ferry ended at 2:30 p.m.
