REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The city of Revere is considering adding bike lanes to a busy section of State Road. But residents have mixed feelings about the proposal.

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation's (MassDOT) proposal calls for two lanes of traffic be removed to make room for two new bike lanes on State Road between Donnelley Square and the intersection of State Road, Ocean Avenue, and Eliot Circle.

"I think it's a little tight," Belinda, a resident against the plan, said. "We definitely need the two lanes [of traffic] because it's affected in the summer with so much from the beach traffic."

Shirley, though, likes the idea and said it would makes things "easier" because there are many people with "electric scooters. And there's a lot of transit here so it causes a lot of accidents, so the [bike lanes] would actually prevent them."

Astrid, another resident, said there are "pros and cons" to the proposal.

MassDOT said the bike lane would also improve the sidewalk along both sides of State Road by "providing a direct, safe and accessible connection for pedestrians and cyclists to the Beachmont MBTA station, Revere Beach and businesses along Ocean Avenue."

The improvements would include crosswalks with accessible ramps and signals.

"I'm disabled and it's really difficult to be able to go across here safely, and a bunch of people have to jaywalk and go when cars aren't coming," one resident said.

A virtual public hearing on the proposal will be held Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
