REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Students performing in Revere High School's rendition of "In the Heights" got a surprise message from the musical's creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
In a video posted by Revere High School drama teacher Kristina Menissian, Miranda started singing the opening song of "In the Heights," then as he finished the first verse, switched to a good luck message for the school's drama club.
"Hey Revere, good morning, break a leg on your show," Miranda said. "Congratulations, remember to be a community every second you’re on that stage."
Menissian also posted a reaction video of the students watching the message, with many of them shouting in excitement when they realized Miranda was talking about them.
"[The students] were screaming … just in shock, and then they watched it a million times more," Menissian told Boston.com. "And then they posted it everywhere they could. Just super excited, what we needed for the morale boost."
She also told the outlet that she received the video from Miranda unprompted after contacting the official merchandizing site for "In the Heights." When Menissian told the man on the phone about the play and the students, she discovered she was speaking with Miranda's brother-in-law, who told her he would relay the message to the Tony Award-winning playwright. Miranda sent the video two weeks later.
The performance of "In the Heights" will be the first musical production at Revere High School in over 30 years.
