REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Hurricane Erin will be passing by New England far out in the Atlantic Ocean, but we will still be feeling some of its effects this week.
Massachusetts is expected to experience strong rip currents and high surf as the storm passes by.
Such news has elicited strong reactions from all sorts of folks from and visiting Revere and its beach.
Jake talked about how this was great news for his surfer friends, who like the water rougher.
“The worse it is, the better they love it,” he said. “They’re just thrill-seekers. Same guys go skydiving with me that do that.”
Sherry and her family are on vacation at Revere Beach, but they actual don’t expect to spend too much time on the beach itself.
“The weather’s not really that warm, so we didn’t plan on doing that much beach time,” Sherry said.

Peter and his family are visitors from Vermont, and they do hope to get some time in the water, while keeping in mind the potential danger.
“We wouldn’t go too deep anyways, but I’ve heard that they’re going to be dangerous, especially in the mid-Atlantic,” Peter said.
He hopes to get some fishing time in as well, weather permitting.
Kim didn’t share the same attitude as Jake’s surfer friends and Peter’s family.
“I won’t be going in the ocean,” she said. “I respect it too much to deal with that.”
This more reserved approach came from came from her own experience with strong rip currents.
“I was small and in the ocean in Marshfield, Mass. and got swept a bit down the shore,” Kim said.
If you ever get caught in a rip current, experts say it’s important to remember to stay calm, swim parallel to the shore rather than directly towards it, and to float calmly if you need to rest.
