REVERE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A city on the North Shore is cracking down on illegal scooters, mopeds, and motorcycles.
The first week of 'Operation Ride Right' in Revere has resulted in 29 seizures of alleged illegal unregistered bikes and issuing violations to operators allegedly driving recklessly.
Police said one driver was arrested for fleeing from police on a stolen moped.
Revere City Council members have been getting complaints from residents about some bike operators making streets more unsafe.
Police Chief David Callahan said police are taking a 'high-visibility zero-tolerance' approach to enforcing the law and targeting the illegal use and possession of scooters, mopeds, and motorcycles.
This resident, who said he used to drive a two-wheel illegally, said he agreed with the more aggressive policing. "When I was ... riding around crazy, bad things could happen."
Another resident said hopefully the effort helps make roads safer by taking illegal bikes and their operators off the street. "They are out of control, and they all come in packs."
The chief said 'Operation Ride Right' will stay in place for the remainder of the year.
