WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — A police cruiser has struck and killed a pedestrian in Rhode Island.

Warwick police say a 25-year-old man “ran into the path of the marked police vehicle” just after 11 p.m. Monday. He was not in a crosswalk.

He was taken to Kent Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have not released the name of the man who was struck, pending notification of family. The officer’s name was not made public either.

Warwick police said a preliminary investigation found no evidence the officer was impaired, speeding or distracted.

The death remains under investigation, with assistance from the state police and the state attorney general’s office.
