PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The remnants of Hurricane Ida swept over New England overnight, and some spots in the region came away with serious storm damage. In Portsmouth, R.I., much of Fairview Lane crumbled under the intense rain.

About a quarter-mile of the road was still closed as of 3:30 PM on Thursday. Police asked residents and others to keep away from the area, and said water service to the houses along the road will be "extremely limited." Portsmouth was among the hardest-hit places in all of New England, notching 8.32 inches of rain during the storm, second only to New Bedford, which got 9.5 inches.

Work crews had arrived and were trying to fill in the road and fix the damage to the road by mid-afternoon Thursday. Police said crews were making progress with the repairs and described a busy scene there.
