BOSTON (AP) — Political rivals Edward Markey and Joe Kennedy III will participate in a debate focused on climate change.

The Boston Globe reports that Kennedy agreed Friday to participate in the debate proposed by Markey. They did not agree on the timing.

Markey wants to debate next month while Kennedy's campaign wants to wait until next year, to "ensure maximum voter impact and participation," and make it part of a series of six debates across the state.

The 73-year-old Markey is running for a second full term in the Senate after spending decades representing Massachusetts in Congress.

The 38-year-old Kennedy, currently representing the 4th District in Massachusetts in the U.S. House, is challenging Markey in next year's Democratic Senate primary.

The contest has split Democratic activists and voters in Massachusetts.
