BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Ahead of the May 7 deadline to get a real ID, which will be required to fly domestically, some Massachusetts residents have been scrambling to the RMV to get new credentials.

Those residents include Joel, who could not get a walk-in appointment at the Haymarket RMV in Boston on Thursday.

“They said that there is no availability for walk-ins today,” Joel said. “I am traveling soon, so I’m trying to figure that out right now.”

John and Cece had more success.

“We walked in, it was pretty easy. When we got there, it was a pretty smooth transaction,” John said. “We got the paperwork, we just got to come back and get the ID.”

The RMV announced earlier this month that it would accept walk-ins for anyone with upcoming air travel plans. But transportation officials said there’s no reason to panic to get a real ID, unless there are plans to travel by plane on May 7 or soon after.

MassDOT said the RMV will continue to offer real IDs as long as it they are required by the Federal Government.

Residents looking for their new ID should also expect it within 10 to 14 business days from their appointment. More information on real IDs can be found on the Mass. RMV website.

A list of other documents accepted by TSA for air travel can be found on the TSA website.
