BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — After years of praise and backlash over a center bus lane in Roxbury, Boston city officials are rolling out new plans to relocate the lane, rather than extend it.

Since its creation in 2021, the Columbus Avenue center-running bus lane has been a hot topic among residents.

While some claim bus commute times improved and cars slowed down to safer speeds, others, like Roxbury local Arady, said there was a fair share of issues.

“This lane in the middle of the street, they have only one way to go, so there’s a lot of traffic,” said Arady.

She was happy to hear the city announced they were not extending the center lane between Jackson Square and Ruggles Station. The lane will instead be moved closer to the curb and follow a more conventional pick-up and drop-off design.

“If they are going to put it to the side, I think it’s better,” said Arady.

The announcement comes amid continued plans to try and implement similar bus lanes along Blue Hill Avenue.
