WOBURN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A former inmate at MCI-Shirley pleads guilty to the attempted murder of a prison guard.

According to Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, 42-year-old Roy Booth attacked Corrections Officer Matthew Tidman at MCI-Shirley on Aug. 31, 2022. Using a metal pole taken from the gymnasium during recreation time, Booth beat Tidman until prison staff intervened.

“Roy Booth’s brutal attack on Corrections Officer Matthew Tidman highlights the dangers that law enforcement, specifically Corrections Officers, face in their day-to-day work,” said Ryan in a statement. “Fortunately, Corrections Officer Tidman, having suffered horrendous injuries, and against all odds, survived this terrifying attack.”

Booth was transferred to Massachusetts in 2021 through the Interstate Corrections Compact, which helps states share prison space. According to court records, he was sentenced to life in prison for the 2001 murder of a woman in Virginia.

On Friday, Booth pled guilty to mayhem and armed assault with intent to murder in Middlesex Superior Court. He was sentenced to 13 to 15 years at MCI-Souza-Baranowski, which he will serve consecutively with the life sentence in Virginia.
