SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Efforts are underway in Somerville to help improve one of the city's busiest and most congested intersections.

An open house is set to be held on Wednesday night at the Healey School for residents to give their ideas and thoughts on improving the intersection at Broadway through Magoun Square.

That intersection is notorious for the safety risks it presents to drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists. "It's really kind of dangerous," said Becka who walks her granddaughter to school on that roadway that includes a five-way intersection and an entrance to a parking lot. "I'm not sure what needs to be done, but it takes something."

She admitted though she can't think of any solutions.

The open house will provide the opportunity for residents to share their ideas and discuss the options on how to make that intersection safer.

But there are residents, like Eric, who don't want any road work. "I think that the residents of Somerville have seen plenty of inconvenience in the last five to seven years doing road projects. Maybe let's take a break from digging up the street for a year or two."

Some of the suggested design changes to make the intersection safer include building a roundabout, curb extensions, floating bus stops, and protected bike lanes.
