BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Plans are underway to bring safety changes to a highly trafficked part of East Boston.

Maverick Square is a very busy area, with buses rolling in and out of Maverick Station, a lot of foot traffic and a lot of cars. Boston’s Transportation Department is currently in the research stage of the Maverick Square Transportation Action Plan (MSTAP), which is expected to be completed sometime in 2026.

According to an update on the project’s website, the city has partnered with Openbox to help residents get involved with the process. That will include publishing an interactive website where people can review safety improvement plans and provide feedback.

“They're helping us take a personal approach to community engagement, using targeted outreach to hear from community members who tend to be less able or inclined to participate in traditional engagement events, like town halls and open houses,” said the Transportation Department in the update.

Elaine and Mike were both happy to provide some suggestions on how to make Maverick Square safer for all.

“It’s just a weird place to drive anyway, so sometimes people get confused, and there’s not enough signage to tell people where to go. They need more crosswalks, especially at the end. Cars sometimes will just run straight through it,” said Elaine.

“A complete bus lane going up and down both sides of the street would be perfect, and we have too much double parking,” said Mike.
