Salem Kicks Off Gay Pride Month With Flag Raising Ceremony

SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Pride Month is officially underway and communities around the Bay State are raising the Pride flag to show their support.

Salem held their annual flag-raising ceremony Thursday afternoon in Riley Plaza.

WBZ NewsRadio's Carl Stevens spoke to attendees of the event.

On Tuesday, volunteers painted the two downtown crosswalks on Derby and Washington streets the colors of the flag to honor Pride Month. The crosswalk project is funded by the city.

Artist Daniel Quasar designed a Pride flag that was raised on Wednesday at multiple Salem schools as a way to support students in the LGBTQ community.

Several neighboring communities will have Pride celebrations and flag-raising ceremonies throughout the month of June.
