SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Salem and Lynn firefighters are still batting brush fires that have been sparking for days.

On Monday morning, Salem firefighters responded to a spot fire off Highland Avenue near the Walmart, which generated so much smoke that cars were forced to slow down on Route 107 to pass by safely. The firefighters were able to douse the flames before they could spread on the hill behind Insa Cannabis Dispensary.

The brush fires started on Saturday and had burned over 100 acres across Salem and Lynn as of Monday morning. Officials said there have been no injuries or structural damage.

On Sunday, Salem Fire Chief Alan Dionne said he was not concerned that the fires would impact Halloween festivities in the Witch City.

“We burn up here often. We’ve had fires in this part of the woods for many, many years and this part hasn’t burned in about six years so there’s plenty of fuel,” said Dionne.

It has been a busy past few days for firefighters across Massachusetts, with fires also popping up in Canton, Middleton, Beverly, Rehoboth and Millbury, where one woman was killed at an encampment.

The National Weather Service has issued an “elevated fire weather concern” risk for Monday across Massachusetts and Southern New England.
