Salem Man Charged In Death Of Salem Police Officer Pleads Not Guilty

SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A Salem man was arraigned in connection with a motor vehicle accident that killed a Salem police officer.

Salem Police Officer Dana Mazola, 56, died from a head-on car crash in Salem on June 26, 2020, while he was off duty.

“Not a moment passes when he is not profoundly missed,” said his widow, Florene Mazola.

Juan Marinez, 26, pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation, speeding, marked lanes violation.

Salem police reported that Marinez was driving a Ford Fusion that struck Mazola’s Toyota.

Marinez was charged eight months after the incident, on Feb. 18.

“While we are thankful for the continuous support we’ve received from the community, the senselessness of this tragedy continues to devastate everyone who loved Dana” Florene said.

Mazola was a 31-year veteran of the department.
