SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Horror is not often considered a kid-friendly genre, but some middle schoolers are trying to master it in Salem, Mass.

A group of students at Collins Middle School volunteered to get some extra work, staying after school to learn how to write horror stories. The class is led by the non-profit Leap for Education and teacher Michael Scarfo said the students love trying to scare each other with their short stories.

“They’re trying to write the scariest story,” said Scarfo. “They’re almost competing against each other to write the scariest story.”

For the final project, sisters Satyra and Madison are working on different perspectives of the same story. Both are looking forward to showing off more of their spooky writing skills.

“Over the last couple of months, the scariest chill I have gotten from reading something was from my sister,” said Satyra.

“The fact that I was able to scare her in four sentences, I was so proud,” said Madison.
