SALEM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Spooky Season is almost here and the Witch City is getting ready for its busiest month of the year.
The City of Salem announced its planned road closures for October Monday, including the plans for its annual Haunted Happenings events to celebrate the Halloween season. Starting the last weekend of September, Essex Street from Hawthorne Boulevard to New Liberty Street and from Barton Square to Washington Street will be closed from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. with no on-street parking as well.
The map and timing of street closures can be found below.
On Halloween itself, streets in Downtown Salem will be closed to all traffic starting at 4 p.m. Those streets include:
Essex Street at Crombie Street and Barton Square to Union Street, Washington Street from New Derby Street to Bridge Street, Federal Street from St. Peter’s Street to North Street, Washington Square North and West from Essex Street to Brown Street, Hawthorne Boulevard, Derby Street, Route 1A, Congress Street near Pickering Wharf, Charter Street, Central Street, Front Street, and Lafayette Street from New Derby Street to Front Street.
The MBTA Salem garage will be closed from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Oct. 31. No cars will be allowed to enter or exit the garage.
The City of Salem is urging tourists planning to visit the city for Haunted Happenings to not drive into downtown, particularly on the weekends. Visitors are urged to park in one of the city's free satellite parking lots and take a shuttle, take the commuter rail, or try out the Salem Ferry that now comes from Boston and Hingham.
