BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio— A well-known Boston-based bank has announced it is closing more than a dozen of its Massachusetts branches including several in Boston.

Santander announced last month it was closing one of its branches in Attleboro.

And now, the bank says it plans to close 16 branches in Massachusetts including five in Boston.

One of the Santander branches scheduled to close is on Beacon St. A customer who uses that branch said news of the closing was disappointing.

“I got a letter in the mail a few days ago,” he said. “It’s disappointing because I live on Beacon St. and this is my preferred branch. I walk by it every day, so it’s unfortunate.”

Santander notified the Treasury Department on April 16 that it plans to close branches across the state, including in Boston, Braintree, Dorchester, Lawrence, and Marlboro.

The bank said one of the reasons for the closings is that since the pandemic less people are coming to branch locations preferring to bank on-line.

This customer agreed with that assessment, saying he hardly ever has to physically go into one of the branches to bank.

“I feel it’s just more convenient doing it on-line,” he said. “I myself have not been inside a bank in a while.”
