NORFOLK, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Norfolk Animal Control rescued five baby squirrels with "sap tail" that fell out of their nest at Stony Brook Wildlife Sanctuary last week.

The baby squirrels got their tails tangled and stuck together from tree sap, a phenomenon called “sap tail” or “squirrel king.”

Animal Control Officer Hilary Cohen said this was the first time she’s seen this happen. While another officer kept the mom at bay, Cohen swept up the babies and rushed them to Main Street Veterinary Hospital in Millis.

“They really did an amazing job with sedating the animals and being able to separate their tails,” said Cohen. “We were able to get them cleaned up and rehydrated and bring them back out here for mom.”

Once the baby squirrels were nursed back to health, they scurried right back up the tall pine tree to reunite with their mother.
