BROCKTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — They call it the "Greatest Show in Sports."
The Savannah Bananas will play their longtime rivals the Party Animals at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton Wednesday evening, but anyone expecting a normal game of baseball will be in for a surprise.
The Bananas are an exhibition team that emphasize entertainment over competition. Playing a unique style of baseball known as "Banana Ball," the Georgia-based team incorporates choreographed dances, fan participation, and giant baseball bats to make the games fun for everyone.
The Party Animals are their typical touring opponent, though the Bananas' 2023 world tour has seen the team play clubs such as the Kansas City Monarchs, the Charleston Dirty Birds, and the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.
Dunkin' announced an official partnership with the Bananas last month. Ahead of Wednesday's game, players from the Bananas and Party Animals met with fans at the Dunkin' on Pearl Street, serving orders, signing autographs, taking photos, and handing out free tickets to the game.
"It’s fun watching the Bananas," one kid told WBZ NewsRadio. "They just do cool dances and stuff."
The Dunkin' partnership also includes free donuts for fans if the Party Animals' designated "donut hitter" gets struck out during the game.
"When he comes to the plate for the Party Animals, we all chant 'donut' at the top of our lungs, every fan in the stadium," said Bananas catcher Bill LeRoy. "And most of the time we strike them out."
The Bananas versus the Party Animals will get underway at Campanelli Stadium at 7 p.m.
