BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — A large group of costumed swimmers took a chilly dip into the waters of Boston Harbor Sunday.
Save the Harbor/Save the Bay held its 13th annual Shamrock Splash at Constitution Beach, where over 130 people dressed as shamrocks and other costumes ran into the freezing cold water. The event raises money for Save the Harbor's Better Beaches Program Partnership, which supports free events on public beaches from Nahant to Nantasket.
"These fake muscles really insulate me pretty well," said Ben, who dressed up as Iron Man.
"Just dive in as fast as you can," another swimmer suggested on how to endure the frosty plunge.
This year's Shamrock Splash participants raised more than $40,000 of the $50,000 goal.
"This is our biggest year yet as far as I can tell," Save the Harbor Executive Director Chris Mancini told WBZ NewsRadio. "We had more people on the beach, we broke all of our past records in terms of fundraising. We’re going to be able to put more money back into the community than ever before."
