LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Lynn Traffic Commission approved an ordinance that bans school buses and vans from parking on city and residential streets. The city claims it has become a safety hazard.
Councilor Pete Meany told WBZ NewsRadio that unauthorized parking in the city had already been an existing issue and the school buses just exasperated the problem.
“So what was going on is between after drop off in the morning, the buses and passenger vans were just going home, and they’re parking in the street,” Meany said.
Jessica Chiappini, Lynn’s Parking Director, added that these buses and vans not only blocked driveways, but also firetrucks and ambulances from driving through. “It’s just become a public nuisance,” she said.
Therefore, the city approved and enacted this ordinance with the goal of resolving the parking problems. Violators would first be given a warning, and than a $50 fine after a month.
The first day of school for Lynn Public Schools is Wednesday, Sept. 4.
