Scituate Animal Shelter Gets Honest With Their Pet Profiles

SCITUATE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Sometimes you adopt the friendliest pet in the world. Sometimes you adopt an "absolute demon."

That is how the Scituate Animal Shelter described Mustache, a six-pound chihuahua, in a Facebook post last month.

"Mustache is 6 lbs of absolute fury," the post read. "A dog with one friend in the whole world, Mustache is looking for a patient soul willing to not make eye contact the first few days after adoption."

Another post described a puppy named Holly as "part monster."

"Will Holly chew everything in your house? Sure will! Will she pee wherever she pleases? Absolutely! Will she shower you with so much love you'll forget all the naughty things? You betcha!" the post read.

The brutal honesty of these pet profiles is all part of the plan, according to shelter worker Amanda Baker, who writes the funny and clever descriptions.

"People are going to look and see this super cute six-pound Papillon mix and fall in love with him, but they need to know that the first few days are going to be a rough go for things," Baker told WBZ NewsRadio Friday. "If you just see a cute poodle puppy, that’s awesome, but you need to know she’s going to get you kicked out of your apartment because she barks all the time."

Baker said potential pet owners need to know what they are getting into, or else the pets will likely end up back at the shelter.

"The more honest we can be, they’re going to stay in a home a lot longer," Baker noted.

The Scituate Animal Shelter currently has 20 dogs and more than a dozen cats in their care.
