BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Residents in Roxbury are concerned after a second Walgreens plans to shut down.

The Walgreens on Warren Street in Roxbury will be closing its doors for good on Monday, Jan. 15. Another Walgreens, which was located less than a mile away, already shut down earlier in 2023.

The community is now concerned because many relied on these Walgreens for their prescriptions. Some of the residents do not have access to a car, meaning they would have to walk an additional 20 minutes to the Walgreens on Columbus Ave.

The manager would not tell WBZ why the store is shutting down, but one of the employees was frustrated with the decision.

“Nubian Square and this one, which are both areas where a lot of elderly are near, and it’s kind of sad that management dropped the ball when it comes to shutting down stores in our neighborhoods,” said Terrance, who works the register.

Prescription records will be available at the Walgreens on Columbus Ave., but that is not easy reach for elderly and disabled residents.

“I go to that one as well, but some people do not have automobiles. I have a car, I can drive. People can’t get around,” said one woman.

“I don’t feel good about it at all. It’s really inconvenient,” said one resident. “It’s like a loss. It is a loss.”

“It doesn’t make sense. We all need healthcare, we all need medicine and it’s unfortunate,” said another resident.
