BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Senator Ed Markey speaking out on ex-FBI Director James Comey’s indictment.

Comey was indicted on two charges Thursday: one count of making a false statement and another of obstruction of a congressional proceeding back in 2020. President Trump had demanded for an investigation into Comey for, who’s been a vocal opponent of the Republican president, for years.

Comey has denied any wrongdoing. He responded to the indictment in a video posted to his social media saying “I have great confidence in the federal judicial system. And I’m innocent. So, let’s have a trial." If convicted, Comey could face up to five years in prison.

In an exclusive interview with WBZ NewsRadio, Senator Markey accused President Donald Trump of abusing his power to secure this indictment, adding that it is “an impeachable offense.”

"It is an unparalleled abuse of power. Richard Nixon is looking down on this, or likely up, shaking his head and thinking, ' Gee, even I wouldn't go this far,'" said Markey.

Senator Markey said he believes President Trump has ripped away the federal bureau’s historic independence.

“Of all the norms Trump has shattered, this may be the most consequential [and] the most dangerous,” he continued. “Because what separates democracy from autocracies and dictatorships is a truly independent judiciary, especially when it comes to prosecutorial power, and Trump has obliterated that now.”

Comey’s arraignment is set for Oct. 9, in Virginia.
