LYNN, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Governor Maura Healey is getting the word out to seniors that they are in store for a big tax cut.

On Wednesday morning at the Lynn Senior Center, Gov. Healey reminded seniors about the state’s Senior Circuit Breaker tax credit. Residents 65 years old and over can receive up to $2,730 in credit for the tax year 2024.

“We cut state taxes for the first time in over 20 years. That’s why this year you’ll be paying less than before, and for many people, including seniors and families with children, you’ll be getting back more than ever before,” said Gov. Healey. “This year with inflation, you can get over $2,700 back in your pocket if you qualify.”

The credit is based on real estate taxes or rent paid on a senior's primary residential property. However, seniors will not qualify for any relief if their primary residence is valued at over $1,172,000.

Gov. Healey also took the chance to criticize President Donald Trump and what he has called “Liberation Day,” announcing new tariffs against Canada, Mexico, China and the European Union.

“I don’t really know why because he’s not really liberating anyone or anything. In fact, what he’s doing is imposing a tax on all of us, and it’s a tax we’re going to be paying from the time we get up to the time we go to bed,” said Gov. Healey.
