BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Seven animal welfare organizations are hosting a Halloween-themed adopt-a-thon for dogs aged one and older starting Monday, Oct. 13.

Four Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-Angell Animal Medical Centers along with the six Massachusetts Animal Shelter Support coalition members are working together to address issues regarding high dog populations amid a decrease in dog adoptions with an event called Creep It Real: Adopt a New Boo!

“We had great momentum over the summer, but as soon as animals go to new homes, those spaces are filled by others who need to come into our care,” Jamie Garabedian, project manager in the MSPCA-Angell’s Animal Protection Division, said in a statement.

Last year, The MSPCA-Angell took in 60% of all dogs and cats transported from out of stated. This year the organizations has taken in 430 dogs through local surrender and 437 through their out-of-state transport program.

“Our transport program is a lifeline for our shelter partners in other parts of the country where homeless animal populations are higher and there are fewer adoptive homes,” Garabedian explained. “We don’t want to abandon those animals in need even when we’re seeing increases in local surrender, especially now that we’re in hurricane season when many shelters need natural disaster relief.”

The fee-waiver event ends Sunday, Oct. 19.
