BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Showcase Cinemas and the Museum of African American History have announced a partnership in time for Black History Month.

The collaboration between the Massachusetts-based theater chain and museum aims to "amplify the voices and stories that shape African American history," according to a statement from Showcase Cinemas.

To kick off the partnership, MAAH will host a film series at Showcase Cinemas in Dedham and Randolph throughout the month.

"Showcase Cinemas approached us and we began to talk about what authentic partnership could look like, and we came up with the idea collectively of doing a film series during Black History Month," MAAH President and CEO Dr. Noelle Trent told WBZ NewsRadio Friday.

Together, they picked films that tell the stories, struggles, and triumphs of African Americans through the years, including "Harriet," "Malcolm X," "Loving," and "Selma." For at least three of the films, MAAH's Historians in Residence, Dr. Kerri Greenidge and Kellie Carter-Jackson, will provide a brief context or a short talk.

"Anytime someone gives you a new context or a new way to think about it, when you view the film, you see it in a completely new way," Trent said.

Beyond Black History Month, Showcase Cinemas said moviegoers and history enthusiasts "can look forward to an array of curated film screenings, discussions and more throughout the year."

The Black History Month Film Series schedule:

  • Wednesday, February 7 at 7:00 PM: “Harriet”
    • Discussion at Showcase Cinema de Lux Randolph with Kellie Carter-Jackson
  • Sunday, February 11 at 4:00 PM: “Malcolm X”
