HAVERHILL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A sinkhole caused traffic problems Monday in Haverhill, Mass. and beyond.

On Monday morning, Massachusetts State Police [MSP] said a sinkhole opened up on Interstate 495 South [I-495] due to a water main break. MSP said the sinkhole is located just after Exit 106.

MSP warned commuters that the sinkhole would have “a major impact” on traffic on the Methuen-Haverhill section of  I-495. Travel on Route 213, Route 110, Route 97 and Route 195 would also likely be impacted.

Road crews began to fix the sinkhole during the day on Monday, but the MSP said repairs would not be complete until later Monday evening and there would be lane closures through Tuesday afternoon.
