NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — In a letter to the Smith College School for Social Work community, officials announced that the Office of Field Education will be renamed to be "Office of Practicum Learning" in accordance with the college's Toward Racial Justice Plan.

Additionally, the school says phrases like "going into the field" or "field work" might have negative connotations.

"While this change may seem small, it is an action among many others, to keep us accountable to our values, to our students and to our Smith SSW community," the letter read.

School officials say they expect the change to take some time to become the norm, offering a language reference key for students and staff to use. For example, terms like "Field Team" will be swapped out in favor of "Practicum Learning Team."

The decision comes at the request of the TRJP to consider that Smith College was not originally designed for diversity, and that times have since changed.
