PLYMOUTH , Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — In the age of inflation and tariffs, groceries are getting costlier by the minute and Halloween candy is no different.

Some parents are mentally preparing for the financial anguish that now comes with buying Halloween candy as tariffs continue to impact wallets across America.

"Probably not the best candies. Chocolates probably won't be in there. It'd probably be more like tootsie rolls," Amy of Plymouth stated.

As the price of cocoa continues to rise due to a 21% tariff implemented by the Trump administration, many families are opting into purchasing cheaper and smaller candies during the spooky season.

"Normally we get a couple bags this year, it's only two bags," one person said.

They've got new candies and the hard candies are a little cheaper," another local stated.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics also show gum and candy prices have climbed 38% in the past five years. Yet, the National Retail Federation predicts Americans will spend nearly $4 billion on Halloween candy this year.

"We could probably get by with giving the kids something," one parent said.
