MIDDLEBOROUGH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — With the rising cost of gas, oil, and electrical sources of heating, some say making the switch to a wood or pellet stove may be the most cost-effective way to stay warm this winter.

WBZ NewsRadio spoke to Eric from Middleborough, who has never thought twice about heating his home with anything but a wood stove.

“Oh [the savings] are huge,” Eric said. “I don’t burn any oil.”

While people are getting sticker shock from their gas or oil bills, electric heating doesn’t seem to offer much of a cheaper alternative either. Eric said that he only pays for one delivery of wood each year to keep his home warm.

“A log truck of wood is somewhere between $800 and $1000,” he added.

While that may seem like a lot, it pales in comparison to the monthly cost of gas and oil delivery.

“It’s a good deal; you’re still saving a lot.”

“It’s the perfect time for it,” said Carl from Taunton.

He is about to upgrade his wood stove to a more modern and efficient unit.

Whether it’s wood or pellet stoves, some people are looking at alternative sources of heat as this winter’s frigid temperatures have combined with higher heating costs.

“It’s because of high oil prices and propane and whatnot,” Eric said.

In Massachusetts, the average cost of heating your home with oil and gas averages around $3.98 and $3.88 per gallon, according to Mass.gov.
