SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — On Tuesday afternoon a resident alerted officials in Somerville that a swan was in distress on the Mystic River, located opposite of Assembly Row. According to Somerville Fire Chief Charles Green, the white coated bird was partially encased in ice, trapped in the middle of the river.

"We dispatched fire companies down there, along with our ice rescue truck- it's happened in that area over the Mystic River several times that I'm aware of, over the last couple years," Green said.

Officials said the swan was freed from icy incarceration and turned over to Somerville Animal Control within an hour.

Green went on to say that officials do not want concerned residents trying to take matters into their own hands without the proper equipment, something that the Headquarters Companies and Special Operations Unit had during the swan's rescue.
