Somerville Officials Close City School To Address Structural Concerns

SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — With building collapses in the news, it’s no surprise officials in Somerville are taking very seriously a chunk of concrete that dropped to the floor recently in a stairwell at a city school.

In fact, the decision was made to close the Winter Hill Community Innovation School building for the rest of the school year and locate the students elsewhere.

No one was inside the building when the piece of the ceiling fell last week, but school officials say they took the conservative measure to shut the building down for the school year while they come up with a plan to address the issue.

Meanwhile, members of the Somerville community including parents of students who attend the school remain concerned about the school’s structural integrity.

Students are being relocated to different school locations throughout the city to finish the year.

WBZ’s Jim MacKay (JimMacKayOnAir) reports.
