SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Somerville Police handed out gift cards in exchange for unwanted firearms during a Gun Buy Back event on Saturday.
This is part of their effort to increase safety and reduce suicide, accidental discharge and domestic violence in the city.
Anyone who dropped off firearms received a gift card that ranged up to $200. No IDs were required and no questions were asked. BB guns and other ammunitions were also accepted but did not qualify for a gift card.
In Somerville, there have been 79 crimes against a person reported so far this year, according to city data.
