SOMERVILLE Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — For local inventor David Lichter, stopping wheel thieves in their tracks has been his mission. He comes at this passion from personal experience, as almost ten years ago, he was almost the victim of a wheel theft himself when thieves nearly stole the wheels off Lichter’s Honda before stopping midway through.
“I was in my 20’s very proud of buying my first car and within weeks to have that shock and horror [of a crime like this],” he said.
Wheel theft is a very common crime that is very widespread and happens to thousands of people. Lichter explains that the regular wheel locks that you find on the market are flawed because they can all be opened if you have the right adapter.
It was during the pandemic that David came up with a solution to this problem by coming up with wheel locks that actually... lock.
“[It’s] a very simple concept, this wheel lock does not lock, [and] we decided to put a lock on it,” he explained.
David’s product has a key and a specialized code that allows that extra layer of security, the mechanism is now up for sale on his website for those who are interested in purchasing his product.
Close to a thousand sets of wheels are stolen in the U.S. every day, according to one estimate.
