SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Somerville officials are set to host a public safety meeting on Wednesday night, as concerns rise over homeless encampments.

Somerville has seen an increase of unhoused individuals setting up encampments around the city, particularly in the Davis Square and Seven Hills Park areas. The public safety meeting comes after someone was stabbed in Davis Square on Sept. 30.

The meeting will take place at Somerville Community Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m. Somerville Mayor Katjana Ballantyne, Somerville Police Chief Shumeane Benford and other officials will be there to answer questions and address concerns.

Terry is a Somerville resident and wants the city to do more to protect the unhoused individuals and Davis Square.

“I think they should house the people into shelters or something, or ban them from the square,” said Terry.

Jill is also a Somerville resident and hopes students will come so they know how to keep themselves safe.

“Being alone in public, you don’t have the experience to recognize a situation that could be dangerous. I know that I had that experience myself going to college,” said Jill.
