South End Standoff Suspect Pleads Not Guilty And Is Held Without Bail

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) – The man who forced police into an hours-long armed standoff in the South End has been ordered held without bail pending a 20-day mental health evaluation.

Police arrested 37-year-old Ernest Fields of Mattapan following a lengthy standoff in the area of Rotch Field on Tuesday. Police said the incident began around 9:41 a.m. and ended at about 5:07 p.m.

Fields was arrested and arraigned in Boston Municipal Court on Wednesday. He pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawfully possessing a firearm and ammunition as well as carrying a loaded firearm and carrying a loaded firearm on school grounds.

Fields already had a warrant out for his arrest and was placed on a recent “Boston Police Most Wanted List.” He faces additional charges of armed robbery and threats to commit a crime from a previous incident.
