HULL, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Normally a customer can get a taco from the South Shore Taco Guy in Hull for between six and eight dollars, but on Sunday, Nov. 10, they could get a taco for whatever they had lying around the house.
The restaurant held its first-ever barter for tacos day, where customers could bring in something to exchange for food instead of having to pay with money.
"The great thing about bartering is it's two people that are both happy," Clint Smith, the owner of South Shore Taco Guy, told WBZ NewsRadio.
So how did it work?
Customers could bring in whatever they wanted and Smith would decide on the spot how many tacos each item was worth. People exchanged things like disco balls, old paintings, and more.
"We got a bugle, I had an artist who made something out of sea glass," Smith said. "[The exchange rate for bugles to tacos] is about one to three. I mean if I knew how to play it I probably could have paid more."
Smith wants to make the occasion an annual event. He said the concept blends well with his policy of letting people eat for free if they can't afford to pay for their food.
"No one goes hungry regardless of your ability to pay," he said. "We've been doing that since the day we started."
